Child Life Specialists help children cope with the feelings they may have about their illness, injury, disability or hospitalization. Child life specialists help children understand their hospital experiences and prepare them for tests by using dolls, pictures and medical equipment. Child life specialists have a masters or bachelor’s degree in child life or a closely related field and must complete a child life internship to become certified by the Child Life Council (www.childlife.org)

Patient Activity Coordinators promote choice, normal development, and self-expression through safe, age-appropriate activities at bedside and in our play areas. In addition to providing scheduled playgroup sessions, they encourage participation in creative arts programs, special events, and volunteer programs. Patient Activity Coordinators have a bachelor’s degree in child development or closely related field.

Hospital Based School Teachers help children remain involved in school activities. Schoolwork provides a sense of normal routine for many children. Teachers can provide contact with a child's school, academic instruction, assistance with homework, reading materials, educational games, and materials and supplies to keep children alert and thinking.

Child Life Students participate in supervised clinical learning experiences in order to meet specific requirements for certification. Student participation occurs at varied levels through our Child Life Practicum and our Child Life Accredited Clinical Internship. Students are active members of our department and help to support coping and normal development for our patients and families.

Child Life Volunteers are trained by the child life staff to provide play and comfort to patients by offering toys, games, art supplies or spending time with infants and toddlers.

Project RISE (Reaching for Independent Successful Employment) creates employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. These employees to keep our toys and equipment clean and safe, provide activities for siblings, restock play materials, and a variety of other important services.
