Information for Foreign Nationals

The U.S. dollar is the official currency of the United States. The United States issues paper currency and coins to pay for purchases, taxes, and debts.

American currency comes in these denominations:

  • Paper: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100
  • Coins: 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢ and $1

Domestic bank accounts

A Social Security Number (SSN) may be required to open a United States bank account, depending on the bank. Some banks will accept a passport or similar form of identification in lieu of a SSN.

If you’re new to the U.S. or trying to maintain financial ties with another country where you previously lived, opening a bank account with a large, international bank is an option to consider.

HSBC Bank offers convenient options for foreign nationals.

  • U.S. mortgages for international borrowers.
