Preparing for an Ultrasound

Children's Mercy technologist conducting an ultrasound on patient's stomach

What to expect: Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a way to take pictures of the inside of your body. An ultrasound machine uses sound waves to see inside your body. A technologist will use clear lotion and a rolling wand that will glide on your skin. The wand can tell how the inside of your body is shaped and makes a picture on the TV monitor. The lights may be turned down so your technologist can see the picture better. The lotion is wiped off when your pictures are done.

Many families have found the additional information provided from RadiologyInfo.org valuable as they have prepared for this type of scan.
