Employee Wellness Center Care Team

William Bednar, MD

William Bednar, MD, believes that listening is one of the best tools in the practice of medicine. By learning where patients are in their life journey, he can help them make the greatest positive impact on their own health care.

Whether working with patients to manage chronic conditions such as hypertension, elevated cholesterol, diabetes and pre-diabetes, or assisting with weight management, he encourages them to make a difference in their own lives. Dr. Bednar believes that preventative health care and healthy lifestyle changes can make the biggest differences in a person’s overall health and well-being.

Dr. Bednar is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and served as Chief Resident in his final year of residency at the University of Oklahoma/Tulsa Medical College.

For 23 years, Dr. Bednar served as a family physician at The Liberty Clinic in Liberty, Missouri. He continues to serve on the editorial staff of The Prescriber’s Letter and The Pharmacist’s Letter. In addition, he enjoys volunteering in the community and spending time with his wife and family.

Dr. Bednar joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2015.

Purnima Mohan

Purnima Mohan, MD

Purnima Mohan, MD, believes in a strong doctor-patient relationship where both individuals work toward the goal of health maintenance. Dr. Mohan feels that patient education, along with a team approach, often helps her patients achieve their desired outcomes. She takes great satisfaction in helping her patients manage their chronic medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and depression.

Dr. Mohan is a board-certified family physician and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Toronto, with a focus on addictions counseling. She earned her medical degree from Universidad Ibero Americana in the Dominican Republic and completed her residency training at The Goppert Trinity Family Care program in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. Mohan practiced family medicine in Belton, Missouri, before joining the Employee Wellness Center in 2014.

Keona Stephens

Keona Stephens, FNP

Keona Stephens, FNP, believes in building relationships with her patients. Her goal is to help patients make choices that will enhance their quality of life. She strives to motivate and educate patients to practice a healthy lifestyle, prevent disease and manage chronic conditions. Keona provides compassionate care and practices a healthy lifestyle, believing this will have a positive impact on patients.

Keona received her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Missouri Western State University and her master’s degree in nursing at the University of Missouri Kansas City.

She has two years of experience with the Samuel U Rodgers Health Center, providing primary and urgent care to all age groups and cultures, as well as chronic condition management and health promotion. Keona also worked at a Walgreens Take Care Clinic, where she provided urgent care.

Keona joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2013.

Jennifer Bae

Jennifer Bae, Pharm.D., BSN

Dr. Jennifer Bae's model of practice is that every patient is unique, but we all have the human body's intricate system in common. She believes that each component of this system must be in working order. If one element is not, the entire system begins to suffer. Dr. Bae knows that with both the patient and provider being proactive, ailments can be delayed or prevented. She also believes that having a cohesive health care team is vital to the wellbeing patients.

Dr. Bae obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kansas. Prior to this, she was a Registered Nurse at KU Medical Center for six years, where she worked in the Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. She obtained her nursing degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

In addition, Dr. Bae has worked as a community pharmacist in the Washington, D.C., area and has assisted with various health clinics.

Dr. Bae joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2013.

Lauren Prout

Lauren Prout, Pharm.D.

Lauren Prout, Pharm.D. believes in the strategic integration of pharmacy services into a whole health approach. She strives to optimize patients' health care outcomes using her up-to-date knowledge, as well as her effective customer service and communication skills.

She attended the University of Missouri and graduated from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy, where she received her Doctor of Pharmacy.

Dr. Prout previously worked as a Pharmacist in Charge at Target in the Washington, D.C., area. While at Target, she spearheaded highly successful community health and guest experience improvement programs.

She joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2013.

Justin Basin

Justin Bastin, LMFT

Justin Bastin, Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, believes in providing client-centered, strength-based behavioral health care for his patients. He considers his clients to be the experts for their life choices and will help guide patients in their search for personal answers. Justin specializes in the treatment of trauma recovery, family conflict, parenting issues, interpersonal relationships and family systems, substance use and anxiety/ depression.

He received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Health and Human Services from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in Family Therapy from Friends University-Lenexa.

Before joining the Employee Wellness Center, Justin worked in non-profit for the Kansas foster care program. Additionally, he works as an addiction counselor with individuals on probation in Wyandotte County.

Justin joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2016.

Mary Vanderman

Mary Vanderman, MSW

Mary Vanderman, MSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, believes in a holistic counseling approach that encompasses treating the mind, body and spirit. She is committed to helping clients with emotional, relational or behavioral difficulties make positive, lasting changes and create a life that’s worth living.

Mary specializes in the treatment of parenting, family and relationship issues; marital distress, infidelity and dissatisfaction; anxiety/phobia, obsessive-compulsive, posttraumatic stress and depressive disorders; grief and loss; chronic pain; and insomnia. She works with clients to develop healthy adult friendships and overcome barriers to creating and maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Her diverse work experience and training includes 20 years of counseling individuals, couples, families and groups ranging in age from early adolescence to advanced geriatrics. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work at Arizona State University in 1988 and her master’s in Social Work in 1996 at Washburn University. She has provided psychotherapy services in various settings at both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health treatment centers in Alabama and in Missouri.

Mary joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2016.

Aubrey Monical

Aubrey Neal, RD, LD and Diabetes Educator

Aubrey Neal, RD, believes healthy food choices and building a healthy relationship with food begins with empowerment and education. She believes nutrition is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution. Her goal is to collaborate with each patient to make healthy eating the easy and intuitive choice. Aubrey enjoys motivating and problem solving with individuals to both prevent and manage chronic diet-related diseases. Additionally, she is passionate about working with people living with diabetes, and prediabetes.

Aubrey received her bachelor’s degree in dietetics at Northwest Missouri State University and completed her dietetic internship through Iowa State University. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in nutrition at Iowa State University.

Previously, Aubrey worked as an outpatient dietitian and diabetes educator at a federally qualified health clinic in St. Joseph, Missouri. While working in St. Joseph, Aubrey designed and developed an outpatient diabetes education program. She also provided nutrition therapy and education to individuals of all ages and disease states.

Aubrey joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2018.

Oji Johnson, ATC/L

Oji Johnson, ATC/L, feels that patient education, listening and establishing trust builds a strong patient provider relationship. This is the best way for both patient and provider to reach goals in therapeutic treatment. As an athletic trainer, Oji enjoys helping his patients reach their therapeutic goals, and return to their active life styles.

Oji is a certified Athletic Trainer by the NATABOC, licensed in the states of Missouri and Kansas. He grew up is Southwest Missouri, receiving his undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training from Missouri State University. He, also received his master’s degree in Health Management and Wellness Promotion from Missouri State University.

Prior to joining Children’s Mercy Employee Wellness Center, Oji brings several years of athletic training experience to the Motion Health Program. Most recently holding positions at Rockhill Orthopedics, SAFEKC, and CenterPoint Medical Center providing outreach Sports Medicine Coverage to Secondary School sports programs.

Oji joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2018.

Brad McGuire

Brad McGuire, RN, BSN, EMT-P

Brad McGuire, RN, BSN, EMT-P, is responsible for clinical operations. He guides the Employee Wellness Center staff by using sound clinical workflows, the latest technology and innovation to benefit patients.

Brad aims to help establish the Employee Wellness Center as a medical home for all patients by using the evidenced-based practice model and clinical experience, considering patient preferences and empowering staff.

He received his bachelor's degree in nursing and master’s degree in legal studies from Webster University. He received his pre-hospital/paramedic training at Creighton University.

Before joining the Employee Wellness Center, Brad worked at Cerner as a Senior Solution Designer for the Order and Plans Development organization. Prior to Cerner, Brad was a critical care, emergency services and perioperative nurse.

Brad joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2016.

Amanda Reed

Amanda Reed, BSN

Amanda Reed, BSN, Health Center Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Employee Wellness Center. She drives initiatives and innovations to help facilitate proactive collaboration between health care providers and patients. Her passion is educating individuals to be actively engaged in their own health care.

Amanda received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Nursing from Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences.

Amanda has worked in both business and health care settings. Before joining Cerner in 2016, she worked as a registered nurse for The University of Kansas Health System, caring for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures. In addition, Amanda worked for H&R Block Financial Advisors, collaborating with area managers to recruit and hire top talent nationwide.

She joined the Employee Wellness Center in 2018.
