Involve Your Family

The Power of Giving

Children’s Mercy has a history of generous community support that began more than a century ago when the hospital’s founding sisters, Dr. Katharine Berry Richardson and Dr. Alice Berry Graham, wrote a list of needs on a chalkboard in front of the hospital. Neighbors and businesses donated everything from blankets to apples, making a big difference in advancing the sisters’ mission — to improve the health and well-being of all children. Although what it takes to operate a hospital has evolved in the last century, the Children’s Mercy mission and the need for community support remain the same.

The Piggy Bank

For nearly 120 years, Kansas City’s generous hearts have rallied around Children’s Mercy and its nonprofit mission to help sick and injured kids get well. In times past, school children saved pennies and nickels in special banks, and to this day, families strolling the Country Club Plaza toss coins for Children’s Mercy into fountains and into the Wild Boar sculpture as they rub his big, bronze snout for luck. Small Change – Big Difference, and this little piggy, hope to inspire our youngest generation to continue this rich tradition of community giving.

Host a Birthday Party

Host a birthday party

Host a birthday party to benefit Children’s Mercy! Encourage friends and family to join your efforts in lieu of receiving gifts. Follow our simple steps to set up your party – choose a theme, invite your guests and set your fundraising goal. Create a Wish List of gifts you’d like to be donated to the hospital using our Gift Gallery, which includes the types of items your donations will help the Child Life team purchase for future families.

The Child Life Department at Children’s Mercy uses a variety of tools to help make hospital experiences easier for patients and their families. Party guests will be able to pick items from your list, like a video game, a mobile for the NICU or therapy toys, and donate the value of their selected items in honor of your birthday.
