PGY2 Residency
Post Graduate Year Two - Pediatrics
Children's Mercy offers one postgraduate year-two (PGY2) position. The PGY2 program meets the requirements of applicable standards set forth and approved by ASHP for a residency and has received American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accreditation.
Program Purpose
The PGY2 pediatric residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Competency Area R1: Patient Care
-
Competency Area R2: Practice Advancement
-
Competency Area R3: Leadership and Management
-
Competency Area R4: Teaching and Education
Program Details
The program is centered on the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care and includes core learning experiences in General Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Neonatal Intensive Care, Hematology/Oncology or Blood/Marrow Transplant, and Pediatric Intensive Care. While all residents complete required learning experiences to establish a strong pediatric foundation, individualized training plans are developed based on each resident’s interests, career goals, and prior experiences. Residents also have the opportunity to customize their training through elective learning experiences aligned with their professional interests.

Learning experiences are designed to suit the individual needs and interests of the resident and exist for all subspecialty areas of practice. The resident will participate in projects within the pharmacy department and will have the opportunity to participate on hospital-wide medication-related committees. Teaching experiences, including both didactic and clinical instruction, are gained through interaction with medical and pharmacy students, pediatric residents, and hospital staff.

In order to increase the available opportunities, efforts are made to ensure each resident has at least one elective block where they are the only resident with an elective at that time; however, availability of elective learning experiences is based on the preceptor’s availability.
