Medical Student Elective & Sub-Internship Rotations

Currently enrolled medical students at accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical schools may request for an elective rotation or sub-internship at Children's Mercy. An approved affiliation agreement must be on file prior to a medical student elective rotation or sub-internship being considered. If we do not have an affiliation agreement on file with your institution, one may be initiated by contacting Susan Hathaway, PhD, at sbhathaway@cmh.edu. If your institution is willing to accept the AAMC Uniform Clinical Agreement, we can get this set up relatively quickly.

Requirements

Elective rotations must be for credit and the medical student must meet all prerequisites prior to the start of the rotation. We only offer 4-week rotations. Our rotation dates are in line with our primary partners at UMKC and KU, there limited flexibility to fit in other specific off cycle dates. If you have questions about the dates for the rotations we offer, reach out to Holly Frey- hlfrey@cmh.edu to see if it can be accommodated.

The following sub-internships are available.  Most required that you have a minimum of four weeks of inpatient pediatrics experience prior to participating in the sub-internship.

Applying for a rotation

Students applying for an elective rotation or sub-internship must apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ (VSLO®) | Students & Residents (aamc.org). The VSLO catalog opens each year on March 1st. Scheduling for June-December rotations will begin in March and the scheduling for January - May rotations will begin in October. Elective placement is made based on a combination of candidate qualifications and timeliness of applications.

Policy on influenza & other vaccination

Children's Mercy requires mandatory influenza vaccination of all employees. Each year, all students will be required to show proof of influenza vaccination and other vaccinations as needed. As a prospective applicant we would like for you to be aware of this requirement before considering Children's Mercy for your student elective. Certain documented medical exemptions will be allowed.

Children's Mercy policy on the maximum number of rotation allowed:

  • UMKC School of Medicine - Maximum of three rotations for each student.

  • KUMC School of Medicine - Maximum of two rotations for each student.

  • All other schools - Maximum of two rotations for each student.

Research experiences and core clerkship rotations are not included.
