Pediatric Cardiology Elective

Educational objectives: To learn how to approach children with potential cardiac problems. Major emphasis will be placed on the effective utilization of basic tools in routine evaluation of cardiac patients: history taking; physical examination that includes inspection, palpation and auscultation electrocardiogram; chest roentgenogram; the ability to recognize most of the innocent murmurs; learn overall management of common congenital heart defects; and understand the long-term results following cardiac surgery for congenital heart defects.

Elective duration: One month

Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship.

Description: This elective is offered as an outpatient to junior and senior residents and senior medical students for four weeks. The purpose of the elective is to learn about and manage commonly encountered pediatric cardiology problems. The residents and medical students will be guided and evaluated by 11 pediatric cardiology faculty members. Residents and medical students are required to attend and be active participants in all required clinics and conferences.

Criteria for passing: Satisfactory performance on the clinical evaluation.

Criteria for honors: Outstanding performance on the clinical evaluation.
