Pediatric Orthopedics

Description: The Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery rotation is a 4 week experience with the orthopedic surgery department at CM. Students will learn about orthopedic conditions unique to children and adolescents and how to treat them. Students will work cooperatively with the orthopedic team on morning rounds, handoffs, conference, on call, in the or and in clinic. Daily schedules usually start with teaching at 6:30am followed by clinical duties at 8:00am. Students will go to both clinic and the OR during their rotation, supervised at all times by a resident, fellow or faculty.

Educational objectives: At the completion of the rotation, the student should:
-Describe common orthopedic disorders of children, including DDH, clubfoot, scoliosis, injuries.
-Develop physical examination screening skills of the musculoskeletal system in children
-Establish a differential diagnosis and plan of workup designed to arrive at a diagnosis
-Prepare and interpret appropriate labs & radiology scans
-Acquire basic surgical skills including suturing, wound dressing, splinting and more.
-Familiarity with some more important principles of preoperative and postoperative care
-Work cooperatively with orthopedic team

Prerequisites: Surgery Core Clerkship

Schedule: Teaching 6:30am-7:30am daily (weekday); Clinical duties 8am-5pm daily (weekday); Call duties 1 weeknight per week, 1 weekend day per rotation

Criteria for passing: Satisfactory performance on the clinical evaluation. 

Criteria for honors: Outstanding performance on the clinical evaluation.
