Pediatric Rheumatology

Educational objectives:

  1. Learn the musculoskeletal physical exam.

  2. Learn the clinical presentations of the most common rheumatic diseases.

  3. Learn which labs to order and how to interpret the results.

  4. Learn which patients to refer and at what point in their work-up.

  5. Be able to categorize musculoskeletal complaints as inflammatory vs. mechanical vs. chronic pain syndromes.

  6. Appreciate the impact of chronic disease on the individual, the family, school performance activities and developmental milestones.

  7. Develop an understanding of the influence of rheumatic diseases and medications on general pediatric care (immunizations, intercurrent illness, etc.).

Elective duration: Four weeks

Maximum enrollment: One student

Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship and must be in the final year of medical school.

Description: The typical schedule will be 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The student will spend approximately 70% of the time in outpatient visits; 20% of the time in hospital rounds and patient care; and 10% of the time in educational lectures/conferences.

Criteria for passing: 

  1. Satisfactory performance on clinical responsibilities in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.

  2. Demonstrate new knowledge acquisition through participation in teaching sessions and formulating clinical assessments and plans.

  3. Satisfactory, original oral presentation.
