Pediatric Neurosurgery

Educational objectives:

  • Learn to take history and carry out physical examination, including neurologic examination, on infants and children focusing on conditions amenable to neurosurgical care.

    Understand the full spectrum of medical conditions in children and adolescents that may benefit from referral to a pediatric neurosurgeon.

    Observe and participate in neurosurgical procedures. Understand the basics principles of perioperative care, and the key elements that differentiate pediatric surgical care from adult surgical care.

Format: Clinical, reading, lectures/conferences

Prerequisites:

1. Completion of core surgical clerkship required
2. Completion of core pediatric clerkship required
3. Completion of a neurology or neurosurgery elective strongly recommended

Typical Schedule: 6am-5pm, M-F

Criteria for passing: Criteria for passing is based on satisfactory attendance, participation and performance during the course of the rotation. Honors is reserved only for students seeking a career in neurosurgery and wishing to obtain a potential letter of recommendation. Additional requirements, such as weekend and overnight call participation expected.
