Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics

Description and Educational Objectives: This rotation is in the Division of Development and Behavioral Sciences. We evaluate and treat a variety of patients, including individuals with autism, ADHD, anxiety, intellectual disability, as well as children who present with complicated medical conditions. Students rotating in this elective will have the opportunity to work with, and learn from all attending physicians, as well as some of the psychologists within our Division. Educational learning objectives are:

  1. To demonstrate ability to identify typical developmental milestones for infants and children birth to age 6yrs.
  2. To describe clinical features of autism spectrum disorders.
  3. To learn about evaluation & treatment for autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays and ADHD in children.
  4. Become familiar with different roles of the multidisciplinary team members in the evaluation and treatment of children with conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, intellectual disability.

Elective Duration: 4 weeks duration

Format: Shadowing MD, PhD, PsyD and seeing consults on the in-patient unit

Maximum Enrollment: 1 student at a time

Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship; must be in 3rd or 4th year of medical school or 5th or 6th year in a 6 year program

Typical Schedule: Clinics are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Conferences/didactics sessions are scheduled throughout the rotation.

Calls: No

Criteria for passing: Appropriate participation in discussion of cases and issues; appropriate behavior with children; and ability to conduct a basic interview with children.

Criteria for honors: Show a high degree of working knowledge of behavioral strategies, typical development in children and psychopharmacology. Ability to conduct an interview of a child with relevant information for complete developmental evaluation.
