Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery Sub-Internship

Educational objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the complex medical problems that occur in the neonatal intensive care unit including the spectrum of problems facing infants and family, especially the necessity and stresses of a prolonged hospitalization.

  • Participate in the assessment and treatment of neonatal problems, including respiratory distress and ventilator management, perinatal acidosis and therapeutic hypothermia, congenital anomalies, and congenital heart disease, neonatal and nosocomial sepsis, and prematuria.

  • Develop an ability to obtain a detailed perinatal and neonatal history, perform a complex neonatal physical examination, and formulate management plans including differential diagnosis and treatment options.

  • Understand the basic science underlying the physiology of complex neonatal disease processes.

  • Learn to apply evidence based knowledge in the diagnosis and management of neonatal disorders.

  • To appreciate the multidisciplinary team care approach in the NICU and the value of all members involved in the care of infants and their families.

  • To develop an appreciation of family centered care in the NICU and the evolution of developmentally supportive care. Participate with the medical care team in family/parent care conference discussions

Calls: Four per month

Criteria for passing: Completing 80% of clinical inpatient participation - fulfilling the objectives of the rotation is the minimum requirement. Satisfactory performance on the clinical evaluation.

Criteria for honors: Completing 80% of clinical inpatient participation - fulfilling the objectives of the rotation is the minimum requirement. Outstanding performance on the clinical evaluation.
