Ketone Management Calculator
Use the Ketone Management Calculator to check for ketones if blood sugar is above 240 mg/dL. Then, follow the action plan provided below in conjunction with instructions from your physician. Please contact the Children's Mercy Diabetes Center at (816) 960-8803 with questions.
Ketone Treatment
Green Zone – High blood sugar NO ketones
- 
Correct high blood sugar using Insulin Sensitivity Factor (ISF)
 - 
ISF: 1 unit will drop the blood sugar _ points
 
Yellow Zone – High blood sugar with trace to small ketones
- 
Correct high blood sugar using Insulin Sensitivity Factor (ISF)
 - 
ISF: 1 unit will drop the blood sugar _ points
 - 
Drink plenty of fluids for the ketones
 
Red Zone – High blood sugar with moderate to large ketones. Act immediately.

Change pump site. Give shots for corrections.
 - 
Give corrections for BG ≥ 240. If < 240, then give carbohydrates to raise BG ≥ 240
 - 
Dose for moderate ketones _ units (10% Total Daily Dose)
 - 
Dose for large ketones _ units (20% of Total Daily Dose)
 - 
Drink plenty of fluids for the ketones
 - 
Check BG & ketones every 2 hours. Repeat dosing for moderate & large ketones
 - 
If you still have ketones after 4 hours, call the diabetes team
 
Hypoglycemia Treatment
If blood glucose is less than 70 mg/dL and your child is able to eat/drink safely then follow the 15/15 rule.
Take 15 grams of fast acting carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, retest blood glucose, repeat as needed.
If your child is unconscious or having a seizure, give glucagon and call 911.
