Department of Social Work


The Department of Social Work provides licensed social workers and other social service professionals to support families in nearly every inpatient and outpatient setting across the health system and into the community. Social Work staff is available for consultation 24 hours per day 7 days per week. Service areas include:

Medical Social Work

  • Comprehensive assessment of psychological and social factors impacting health outcomes
  • Supportive counseling related to grief, adjustment to illnesses and family issues
  • Trauma response, crisis intervention, and assistance with disruptive or dangerous families
  • Care Management and care coordination to ensure patients and families are linked to health and social services to support positive health outcomes 

Social Work Child and Family Mental Health Services

  • Structured therapy services using evidence based treatments
  • Inpatient and outpatient crisis intervention services
  • Acute Mental Health Screening (AMHS) at our Adele Hall and Kansas Emergency Departments and planning for immediate and ongoing mental health services 
  • Screening for mental health and psychosocial needs including intimate partner violence, bullying, depression, suicide and community resource needs

Community Programs and Special Initiatives

  • Home-based family support programs including the TIES (Team for Infants Exposed to Substance abuse) and Healthy Families Children’s Mercy programs to partner with families of an infant/expected infant to promote attachment and bonding and build strong parenting skills 
  • Center for Community Connections to help families navigate community health and social service systems to address family needs and improve health outcomes 
  • Transition to Adulthood Program to prepare young adult patients to manage their own health care and to successfully transition to the care of adult providers
