Pregnancy preparation: Your guide to a healthy start
Getting ready for pregnancy is exciting and overwhelming all at once. There’s a lot of advice out there. But what really matters? We asked a nurse and a Children’s Mercy mom to share their best tips so you can feel informed and supported.
Start with the basics: Prenatal care and vitamins
The most impactful step early on is to begin prenatal care without delay. Schedule your first appointment, start prenatal vitamins and make sure you’re up to date on immunizations like flu, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap). If you have chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, talk to your provider about managing them before and during pregnancy.
Embrace your changing body
Every pregnancy looks different. Some parents feel like themselves until delivery, while others notice changes right away. Try not to compare. Be honest with your doctor if something feels off and remember your journey is unique.
Stay active and hydrated
Moderate exercise can help with energy, heart health and even some pregnancy aches. Keep workouts short and safe. Hydration is just as important—even if those extra bathroom breaks make it tricky.
Mental health matters
About 1 in 5 women experience mental health challenges during or after pregnancy. Anxiety and depression are common, and you’re not alone. Talk to your doctor early about emotional wellness and safe treatment options. Journaling your thoughts and sharing them with your support person can help you feel grounded.
Busting myths about preparation
Many parents think if they prepare perfectly, they can control the outcome. The truth? Biology, timing and chance play big roles. Preparation reduces risk but doesn’t eliminate uncertainty. Confidence comes from clarity and trust—not endless internet searches.
Advocate for yourself
Advocating for your care can feel intimidating, but it’s essential. Clarify your priorities, ask questions in plain language and don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. Good providers expect and welcome your involvement.
When it feels overwhelming
If your to-do list feels endless, focus on what matters most: your health and your baby. Perfection isn’t required. Flexibility is key, and support systems are there to help.
Preparing for pregnancy isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about taking small, meaningful steps toward a healthy journey for you and your baby. Trust your instincts, lean on your care team and remember support is always available. You’re not alone in this. Every question you ask, every appointment you make and every moment you take to care for yourself matters. Give yourself grace and know the best preparation is prioritizing your well-being and embracing the adventure ahead.
