Order a Diagnostic Test for Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
- Only written/faxed orders within 30 days of the date of service will be accepted.
- Direct-access testing or patient-authorized testing is not permitted.
The policy at Children's Mercy is to provide outpatient services only when ordered by a practitioner (MD, DO, DDS, DMD, APRN, PA) who is properly licensed and eligible for participation in Medicare and other Federal health care programs. APRNs and PAs orders will only be accepted if the provider holds a Kansas and/or Missouri license.
There are many different types of allergy panels available depending on the laboratory offering the service. When we receive panel orders which don't match our panels we will offer the family the option to have 2 tubes of blood collected, which are highly likely to cover what is needed, and follow up on order resolution after the collection. This will require orders on a Children's Mercy requisition and may cause a delay in testing.
Genetic testing often requires insurance preauthorization. Please include the Authorization number on the requisition when ordering. Orders without an authorization number will require follow-up and may be delayed. CPT codes for genetic tests are available in the Lab Test Catalog.
Financial considerations and requirements
To comply with all state and federal transparency requirements, Children’s Mercy requires all ordering providers to verify all requirements with the patient’s health insurance plan are met, including but not limited to:
- Verify Children’s Mercy is in-network with the patient’s health insurance plan (See: Insurance Plans and Coverage Types Accepted)
- Medical necessity criteria are met with the health plan
- Testing you have ordered is a covered benefit with the health plan
- Obtain any required prior authorization prior to testing being ordered
Please note: Children’s Mercy reserves the right to refuse service if any of the information above has not been completed prior to the order being received.
To help families keep their costs low and avoid surprise bills, patient who require laboratory services should be referred to a lab who is in-network with their insurance plan. A full list of plans that are in and out of network with Children’s Mercy is available on our Insurance Plans and Coverage Types Accepted page.
Families who present to Children’s Mercy with out-of-network insurance will be encouraged to take their order to an in-network lab or be given the option to pay completely out-of-pocket for their testing and not bill their out-of-network insurance.
