Advance your academic career

At Children’s Mercy, you control your career. While we do expect academic rigor and excellent patient care, we don’t set hard and fast deadlines for advancement. You tell us where you want to go, and we help you get there.

The Office of Faculty Development has a robust support infrastructure designed to take (some of) the stress out of the academic promotion process. The office will meet with you soon after your first day to learn about your passions and academic goals. As your career progresses, your faculty development team will help you track your progress, develop a promotion strategy, and—when the time comes—create an academic promotion portfolio.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City is an independent pediatric academic health system. Our faculty hold academic appointments at multiple universities, including the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas. As an institutional partner, the Office of Faculty Development supports faculty as they build their academic medicine careers, from education to research to professional service.

Embrace your “always teaching, always learning” mindset

Diverse teaching opportunities, educational programming, learning advancement opportunities, mentorship, service opportunities—Children’s Mercy faculty have no shortage of ways to grow.

  • Children’s Mercy faculty teach 100 residents and 120 fellows in 45 programs. Additionally, we are the pediatric site for 600+ residents at nearly 60 adult programs at partnering institutions across the Midwest.
  • Students from three local medical schools and dozens of national institutions learn in every corner of the institution. Robust programs in nursing and allied health contribute to a culture of learning across disciplines.

The Office of Faculty Development, Leadership Center for Physicians and Children’s Mercy Berry Institute offer a full annual curriculum—live and on-demand sessions and workshops designed to help develop skills and strengthen relationships that lead to positive impacts on faculty, their colleagues, their system and their communities.

Children’s Mercy offers a wide variety of Continuing Medical Education opportunities, including:

  • Weekly Professor Rounds and Grand Rounds; and Academic Scholarship conferences.
  • Development offerings provided by the organizations listed above as well as the Office of Equity and Diversity.
  • Approved curricula provide skills related to success in research, grant writing, and quality improvement. Some of these opportunities also qualify for MOC Part 2 credit. Children’s Mercy has portfolio status with the American Board of Pediatrics and can approve projects for MOC Part 4.

Pursue innovative research

Whether you are still learning how to pose a research question or have years of research experience, Children’s Mercy has resources to support your curiosity and drive.

  • The Children’s Mercy Research Institute (CMRI) integrates research and clinical care with nationally recognized expertise in genomic medicine,
precision therapeutics, population health and health care innovation. The institute supports faculty researchers and their teams with laboratory
services, such as genomic sequencing, informatics programs and large-scale data repositories. The institute also acts as a catalyst for collaboration between Children’s Mercy researchers and colleagues around the globe.
  • The Library Services team is your partner in practice, research and education. The Library provides access to a curated collection of online and print materials, including point of care tools, clinical databases, and leadership, diversity, and innovation resources. Librarians are available to assist with literature searches, resource instruction, and research process support. The Library also manages SHARE@Children’sMercy, the institutional repository highlighting scholarly work at Children’s Mercy.
  • The Biostatistics and Epidemiology Core carries out its own original research while also mentoring researchers, providing statistics training, and sharing its expertise with the wider scientific community.
  • The Medical Writing Center helps increase academic scholarship productivity through editing, consultation, workshops and manuscript preparation groups.
  • Grant Writing Clubs are a new initiative led by experienced faculty to help researchers at all levels explore grant writing, research design and scholarship dissemination.
  • Research Navigators are new positions being developed in the CMRI to provide expert guidance to researchers of all experience levels through their next research project.
