Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Each of our trainees is expected to complete a minimum of one scholarly project during the course of their fellowship, resulting in the submission of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed publication. In addition, each fellow is expected to present findings during at least one national meeting and during the Children’s Mercy Annual Resident/Fellow Research Days.

New fellows have a research block scheduled early in their first year. This time allows for the formation of a mentoring relationship with a faculty member (either inside or outside of our division), followed by development of a research question and specific aims. After this, the program leaders assist in creating a scholarship oversight committee (SOC). The SOC will meet regularly with the fellow throughout his or her training to monitor the progress of the project, provide guidance and assure that the fellow is engaging in a meaningful and educational scholarly endeavor that will meet the requirements for board certification.

Past/current fellows have completed scholarly work in the areas of bioethics, clinical research, translational research, basic science, education and quality improvement. The existing faculty have a wide variety of research and quality improvement interests and have associations with PALISI and other national collaborative groups, allowing for flexibility when choosing a project.

In addition, the Children's Mercy Research Institute supports a large number of basic-science, translational and clinical research projects. We have an exciting opportunity with the newly endowed Children's Mercy Research Institute.

Current fellow research/QI projects:

  1. Hyperoxia and association with mortality in a large multi-center database
  2. Transport medicine: creating triage criteria by assessing high acuity floor to PICU transfers
  3. Hemodynamic parameters in pediatric scald burn patients
  4. Outcomes of code blue activation based upon race/ethnicity/language preference
  5. Factors associated with readmission to pediatric cardiac intensive care units
  6. Quality improvement for continuous renal replacement therapy in resource-limited settings
