Clinical Experience

Pediatric Dentistry Residency

The Residency Program in Pediatric Dentistry is conducted in the Hall Family Outpatient Center of Children's Mercy. The hospital is located adjacent to the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.

Clinical equipment

The Dental Clinic has eight operatories, each equipped with Sirona Digital Intraoral X-Ray units (Schick Sensors) and central nitrous oxide and oxygen for providing relative. Digital radiographs are read and stored electronically within the DCR Dicom Schick software system. An I-CAT 3D cone beam scanner is also available in the clinic.

A small dental laboratory is located in the Dental Clinic at the hospital. The lab allows residents to pour and trim study casts and to fabricate minor tooth movement appliances and space maintainers. Most other prosthetic appliances are sent to a commercial dental laboratory.

Surgical suites

Children’s Mercy currently has 19 operating rooms. The Department of Dentistry is block scheduled each Thursday. Dental patients may be scheduled on other days based upon dental care urgency and faculty availability. Most patients recover from outpatient conscious sedation in the dental operatory. Patients requiring longer recovery are taken to the Same-Day Surgery recovery area, where they are closely monitored until they are fully recovered and can be release in the care of their parents.
