How to Apply

Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship

The Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Program appoints one fellow each year through the San Francisco Matching Program. Qualified applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited Ophthalmology residency program prior to beginning of the fellowship.

Each applicant is required to fill out the online Central Application Service (CAS) application form and provide 3 letters of reference through the San Francisco Match. One letter of reference must be from a Chair and one from a Subspecialist. Applications are due by October 1. Interviews take place the end of October. All applicants must have passed Step 3 to be eligible to be ranked.

International applicants

The Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship program does not qualify for ECFMG J-1 visa sponsorship. Children’s Mercy will sponsor H-1B visas for qualifying international citizens accepted into the program. In some cases, Children’s Mercy will sponsor an O-1 visa.

For international medical graduates seeking H-1B sponsorship, we have the following additional requirements:

  • Completion of all three steps of the USMLE.
  • Clinical experience in the United States is preferable.

Changing Immigration Status

Residents/Fellows who wish to change their immigration classification while pursuing a graduate medical training Program at Children's Mercy must seek prior written approval from the GME Department. Failure to seek such approval will subject the trainee to immediate termination from his/her training Program.
