Pediatric Pain Management
Description: A four week rotation focusing on treatment of chronic pain in pediatrics. Students will rotate through various clinics including amplified pain, complex pain, and sickle cell integrative persistent pain (SCIPP) in addition to spending time with the Rehabilitation for Amplified Pain Syndromes (RAPS) program and inpatient complex pain service team. Students will have exposure to both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment approaches to chronic pain. Many clinics will be multidisciplinary with opportunities to work with other disciplines including psychology and social work. There may be opportunities for observing biofeedback sessions as well.
Educational Objectives:
- Describe basic components of the biopsychosocial assessment of chronic pediatric pain
- Describe how chronic pain in children impacts the child's family as well as the child's physical, social, academic, and/or emotional development
- Effectively discuss the pathophysiology and treatment strategy for amplified pain with patients and families
- Prescribe a treatment approach for amplified pain that does not require drug therapy for pain or sleep
- Demonstrate knowledge of differences between treatment of chronic pain and acute pain in the pediatric population
- Name at least one evidence-based nonpharmacological and one pharmacological treatment for pediatric chronic pain and the appropriate indications

Format: Clinical
Typical schedule: The rotation is mostly outpatient clinic with a general schedule of 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday with some opportunities for shadowing inpatient complex pain consults. No call.
Prerequisites: Completion of Core Pediatric Clerkship; must be in 3rd or 4th year of medical school or 5th or 6th year in a 6 year program.
Criteria for passing: Participation in clinical activities with professionalism and completion of a presentation on topic related to pediatric chronic pain.
Criteria for honors: Excellence in presentation, demonstration of superior clinical skills and knowledge related to pediatric chronic pain, and participating in clinical activities with professionalism.
