Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Description:  The pediatric infectious diseases consultation service is an integral part of the care for hospitalized children with common or rare infectious diseases. Participants within this elective are expected to be an active member of the consultation team. The team consists of a pediatric infectious diseases attending, general pediatrics residents, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and at times a pediatric infectious diseases fellow. Participants will have their own patients where they collect the comprehensive history, perform a physical examination, and develop an assessment and plan that is then presented to the attending physician. Accurate medical documentation is then expected on all patients being followed by the participant. In addition to the clinical activities of the elective, there are multiple educational sessions throughout the month the participant will be expected to attend.

Educational objectives:

  • Gain exposure to pediatric infectious diseases.
  • Understand general principles of antibiotic spectrum and dosing in the pediatric patient.
  • Understand common pathogens and treatment of common pediatric infectious diseases.
  • Examples include musculoskeletal infections (septic arthritis, osteomyelitis), meningitis, complicated pneumonia.
  • Understand evaluation for prolonged fever, Kawasaki disease.
  • Become proficient at obtaining a thorough and complete history.
  • Perform new inpatient consultations, follow up patients we are following while admitted.
  • Be a part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate ability to document efficiently and completely by writing new consultation and daily progress notes in the medical record.

Elective location: Children's Mercy Adele Hall Campus

Elective duration: Four weeks

Format:

  • The focus will be on inpatient consultation.
  • Anticipate student will perform eight-to-ten inpatient consultations per week and see six-to-eight outpatients.

  • Didactics will be ongoing and correlate with patient/clinical experience. 

Prerequisites: Completion of the Core Pediatric Clerkship with a minimum of four weeks of inpatient pediatrics. Must be in the final year of medical school.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, usually 8 am - 5 pm

Criteria for passing: Satisfactory performance on the clinical evaluation.

Criteria for honors: Outstanding performance on the clinical evaluation.
