Advanced Medical Interpreter (AMI) workshops


The Language Services Department at Children’s Mercy Hospital is pleased to offer medical Interpreter workshops to community and medical interpreters. Our workshops are designed to train novice and experienced medical interpreters through theory and performance-based training. Our workshops are accredited by the Continuing Education Accreditation Program (CEAP) through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). Interpreting for Asthma


Purpose and objectives:

  1. Discuss what is asthma and why is it important.
  2. Explore common vocabulary used when discussing asthma.
  3. Review an asthma action plan and understand what it means.
  4. Importance of interpreters in an asthma encounter.

Interpreting for Chaplaincy


Increasing attention is being given to the role of spirituality in health care. This is an acknowledgement that as human beings we are more than just our bodies, and that everyone experiences illness differently depending on their life experiences. This course will explore the role of chaplain in a hospital environment, and how medical interpreters can best work with chaplains to meet patient needs.

Purpose and objectives:

  1. Discuss the importance of chaplaincy and the role of the interpreter when working with chaplains.
  2. Explore the different responsibilities of a chaplain and how the interpreter can contribute.
  3. Review specific vocabulary, cultural and ethical issues related to chaplaincy.

Interpreting for Pediatric Primary Care


Purpose and objectives:

  1. Discuss the importance of primary care and the role of the interpreter in that setting.
  2. Explore the different providers and themes found in the primary care setting.
  3. Review specific vocabulary, cultural and ethical issues.

  1. Discuss the importance of interpreters as a part of the care team.
  2. Explore common ailments and treatments that one may encounter in a pediatric dermatology clinic.
  3. Review specific vocabulary, cultural and ethical issues.
