Clinical Experience

Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship

Fellows will be on rotations (inpatient and outpatient) for 2 weeks at a time. Outpatient rotations will involve working with faculty in their specific pulmonology clinic. Overnight call while inpatient will be Tuesday and Thursday nights and one weekend starting on Saturday.

  • Inpatient Pulmonary Service: In this setting, the fellow has the responsibility of managing the consultation service in the care of a child with both acute and/or chronic respiratory disorders. Additionally, the fellow supervises the teaching of pediatric residents, medical students and other allied health professionals participating in the care of these patients. The Inpatient Pulmonology service see over 600 inpatient consults a year.
  • Continuity Clinic: Each fellow will be assigned one half day a week of continuity clinic early in their fellowship training. On the average, they are assigned a total of six patients in each half day of clinic. The fellows provide continuity of care to patients and their families. The fellows are supervised by the outpatient attending physician. The Pulmonology Outpatient clinic sees over 4,000 clinic visits a year.
  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Care: As a certified CF center, fellows care for patients with CF, both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Fellows serve as key members of the multidisciplinary cystic fibrosis care team, which includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, social workers, and clinical pharmacist. Fellows will also rotate in the outpatient CF clinic every monthly. The Cystic Fibrosis team performs up to 100 bronchoscopies in a year.
  • Pediatric Sleep Disorders: Fellows will rotate in the sleep clinic for one month during their first year. Fellows are expected to participate in the sleep clinic and to be involved in the scoring, analysis, and interpretation of comprehensive polysomnography, multi-sleep latency test (MSLT), and actigraphy.

Other multi-disciplinary clinic opportunities (years 2 and 3):

  • Tracheostomy/Mechanical Ventilation Clinic: Fellows will rotate in this clinic during their second year of fellowship with more opportunities either in the inpatient setting (in the NICU or PICU) or outpatient setting.
  • Pulmonary-Sickle Cell Clinic: Fellows will have an opportunity to be a part of this multi-disciplinary clinic during their third year of fellowship.
  • Pulmonary Hypertension Program: During the rotation, fellows are expected to assess and manage a myriad of patients with pulmonary hypertension both in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Pulmonary-Rehab [Muscle-Nerve] Multidisciplinary Clinic: The clinic includes a diverse group of providers (pulmonology, cardiology, physical medicine and rehab, palliative care, OT, PT and nutrition) who focus on overall care of patients with neuromuscular conditions.
  • Advanced Asthma Interdisciplinary Respiratory (AAIR) Clinic: The AAIR Clinic team includes several different specialists (pulmonology, allergy, environmental health nurse, respiratory therapist, nutritionist, social work) who all work together to build an effective care plan for children with severe asthma.
  • Pediatric Radiology: The primary goal of this experience is to provide fellows with the knowledge and skills required to select and interpret imaging studies pertinent to pediatric patients with respiratory diseases. Fellows will rotate in this clinic during their second year of fellowship.
  • Pulmonary Function Laboratory: Fellows are also expected to gain a general understanding of how laboratories function, including principles of quality control, validity and reliability of tests. First-year fellows participate in the interpretation of pulmonary function tests performed in their continuity clinic.
