Hypertension Treatment

Hypertension treatment at Children's Mercy Kansas City provides specialized care for children with high blood pressure. Our pediatric nephrologists develop care plans tailored for each patient's needs while collaborating with highly trained nurse practitioners to manage ongoing care.

About High Blood Pressure in Children

Hypertension is the primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease in adults and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and strokes.  Fortunately, the adverse cardiovascular outcomes are infrequently observed in children with hypertension, but there is good evidence at the onset of cardiovascular disease begins in childhood.  Hypertension is identified in about 1 percent of healthy children with much higher rates observed in children with obesity and kidney disease.

What to Expect During Your Visit

The initial evaluation will include a thorough review of the child's medical history, including a review of prior test completed related to hypertension, medications, and a complete physical examination.

Blood Pressure Monitoring
The clinic offers home blood pressure monitoring education and, when indicated, pediatric specific ambulatory blood pressure monitoring studies.

Specialized Testing
When a more in-depth evaluation is needed, the clinic offers the opportunity to obtain specialized testing by pediatric trained radiologist, cardiologist, sleep study specialist, weight specialist and nutritionist.

Before the Appointment

Any previous test or radiological studies should be sent from your doctor's office before the appointment. If the child has had imaging studies done in an outside facility, a CD containing the images should be sent to the hypertension clinic prior to the appointment.
