Academic Curriculum

Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Fellowship

The fellow will participate in the following education activities:

Simulation

  1. ECMO Transport training day
  2. ECMO multi-discplinary simulation twice, one in fall session and one in spring
  3. Surgical fellow ECPR Training and Simulation Day
  4. All Fellow boot camp ECPR Simulation day

Program Meetings

  1. ECMO Executive Committee (EEC) and strategic growth meetings
  2. Quarterly Extracorporeal Leadership Meetings
  3. Quarterly ECMO Case conference
  4. Attend CRRT Executive meetings

Mandatory Didactic Offerings

  • Summer ECMO Course and Winter Advanced ECMO course
  • Selected lectures from PCCM lecture series  
  • PICU lectures regarding CRRT/PLEX/ECMO
  • Children’s Mercy Kansas City CRRT course

Other Academic Activities

  • Complete expected readings from Red Book, ECPR book and other selections as assigned by the Program Director
  • Maintain logs of participation in ECMO rounds, CRRT/PLEX initiation and therapies, observation of echos/bronchs on ECMO and keep detailed notes from required didactic offerings.
  • The fellow will additionally achieve Peds/Neo Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) certification
  • The fellow will present at the winter advanced course
  • The fellow will present at a PICU academic conference meeting on a topic of interest to them as related to ECMO.

The fellow will participate in the following leadership and operational and administrative experience. Today’s ECMO Fellows are tomorrow’s ECMO Directors. Therefore we believe dedicated leadership training is essential.

  • Participate in a customized 9-month mentored leadership experience building from the All fellows Common Curriculum
  • Apply leadership principles learned in the course to clinical and educational settings.
  • Participate in administrative meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and administrative meetings.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.

Common Curriculum and Didactics

 

PCCM Core Curriculum

  • Weekly noon conference prepared by CM faculty or fellows focusing on clinical or physiology topics.

    • Includes specific lecture series for cardiac critical care and neuro critical care.

PCCM Scholarly Conference

  • Weekly noon conferences prepared by CM faculty or fellows that provide a foundation for clinical research and opportunity to discuss ongoing research endeavors.

    • Includes specific series for quality improvement and research design 

    • Includes case conference and journal club

PCCM Education Conference

  • Monthly continuing education conference prepared by CM faculty or fellows on a topic of their choosing. PCCM is a lecture designed by fellows with the goal of exploring critical care topics in depth and discussing controversies and challenges in the field. This opportunity allows fellows to expand their knowledge on a specific topic, apply evidence-based medicine, and potentially guide their practice towards improved patient care.

  • Presented to critical care physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, pediatric residents and medical students.

PCCM Morbidity and Mortality Conference

  • Monthly PICU and Heart Center conferences.

  • Case summaries prepared by PCCM or Cardiology fellow or attending.

ECMO Conference

  • Quarterly multidisciplinary conference required for all ECMO providers in the hospital covering a variety of topics including case conference, QI updates, etc.     

Cardiac Disposition Conference (Optional)

  • A biweekly conference to review echocardiographic, radiologic, clinical and catheterization data of children with congenital heart disease.

  • Attended by physicians, nurses, trainees, and other multidisciplinary staff.

Fellow Administrative Meeting

  • Monthly meeting are held to discuss administrative aspects of fellowship and provide opportunity to discuss fellow questions/concerns.

Quarterly ECMO Conference

  • Multidisciplinary conference required for all ECMO providers in the hospital covering a variety of topics including case conference, QI updates, etc.

  • Grand Rounds - Local and national speakers present pertinent pediatrics topics weekly.

  • Professor Rounds – Case-based presentations for residents and faculty prepared and presented by a senior resident each week.

  • Pediatric Resident Morbidity and Mortality – A monthly conference structured to define ways to improve quality of care through the analysis of recent cases.

  • Faculty Development Lecture Series – Fellows are invited to attend lectures and workshops organized by Children’s Mercy’s Office of Faculty Development.
