Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology Student Elective
Description of rotation
This is a one month elective rotation with emphasis on outpatient, inpatient and surgical management of pediatric and adolescent gynecology patients. A wide variety of gynecology conditions will be seen including vulvovaginitis, labial adhesion, early or late puberty, adolescent period problems, ovarian cyst, ovarian/tubal torsion, uterine anomalies and vaginal anomalies. Rotation will include a mix of clinic, inpatient, and surgical management of reproductive concerns in patients from birth until age 21. Didactic will be weekly including OBGYN resident in addition to impromptu discussion based on patient seen by attending or fellow.
Educational objectives
- Become familiar with normal and abnormal puberty
- Be able to discuss embryogenesis of reproductive system and related anomalies
- Recognition of heavy menstrual bleeding, basic understanding of work up of bleeding disorder and be familiar with treatment options.
- Recognition of symptoms of endometriosis and how it differs from dysmenorrhea
- Be able to discuss vulvovaginitis in pediatric patient and understand how it is different from pubertal patient.

Format
- Participate in multiple weekly clinics (average seven) and inpatient consultations as well as didactic sessions. Most of clinical activity is in an observational capacity.

- Complete OBGYN rotation
- Calls
- 8 home calls during rotation
- Criteria for passing
- Regular attendance and participation in outpatient clinics/inpatient consultations (typical hours 8 am. to 5-6 pm)
- 10-15 min oral presentations pertaining to gynecology condition observed during rotation
- Criteria for honors
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families/gynecology staff
- Evidence of extra reading
- Pulling of pertinent articles for patient care
- Participation in didactic interactive sessions with demonstration of superior fund of knowledge in gynecology
- Writing up case report
