Meet Luis E. Sainz

BBA, CCHI, Clinical Research Coordinator – Bilingual, Children’s Mercy Research Institute, Research Core

1. What is your current role at CMRI?

Luis E. Sainz

As a clinical research coordinator with proficiency in both English and Spanish, I provide research support across several divisions, including Endocrine, General Academic Pediatrics, Developmental and Behavioral Health and Urgent Care. My responsibilities encompass administrative duties for the divisions, such as preparing regulatory documents, coordinating data for clinical trials, managing databases, handling research billing, conducting audits and generating reports. I collaborate with both external and internal Institutional Review Boards on ongoing reviews, modifications and protocol adjustments. Additionally, I occasionally contribute to qualitative research projects and find satisfaction in developing REDCap projects.

2. What drew you to a career at CMRI?

My professional journey at Children's Mercy began in 2015, where I initially served as a Medical Interpreter. In this role, I provided invaluable support to limited English proficiency families across the entire hospital system. Although the experience was deeply fulfilling and impactful, I gradually developed a desire to forge a more direct and comprehensive connection with the families we served. Reflecting on my background and experiences, a career in research emerged as a compelling and natural progression. I officially joined CMRI in 2021, initially contributing my skills and enthusiasm within the Endocrinology and General Pediatrics divisions. Despite entering the field with limited prior research experience, I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship and guidance provided by exceptional leaders and team members, which has been instrumental in my development and growth as a clinical research coordinator.

3. What are your research/career goals?

As a clinical research coordinator, my objectives involve expanding research opportunities to encompass all backgrounds represented within Children's Mercy families. My aspirations include:

  • Ensuring the implementation of inclusive research studies.
  • Promoting equitable access to research programs.
  • Supporting the use of culturally sensitive research methodologies.
  • Increasing inclusive representation in research initiatives.
  • Cultivating a welcoming environment for all participants.

4. What is your favorite thing about working at CMRI?

I find immense satisfaction in my interactions with the patient families and my colleagues here at CMRI. The connections I make with the families are truly rewarding, and I especially cherish the moments when I can enter their rooms with a smile. Witnessing their positive reactions to my presence is incredibly fulfilling and makes a significant difference in their day and mine. Beyond that, I am exceptionally proud to be a part of such a supportive and collaborative team. The strong sense of team spirit and mutual respect among my coworkers is something I deeply value. I also want to acknowledge that our leadership plays a crucial role in fostering this positive and supportive environment, enabling us to excel in our work and make a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients and their families.

5. What is on your bucket list?

Currently, my bucket list includes several exciting aspirations. Firstly, I aspire to purchase a home in El Salvador, creating a joyful retreat for family vacations and allowing me to reconnect with my culture. Secondly, I am eager to explore the rich cultures and stunning landscapes of Europe, immersing myself in its diverse history and beauty. Lastly, I get to cross off one of my most ambitious dreams this year. In June 2026, I will be a DJ at one of the VIP lounges inside the Arrowhead Stadium at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, contributing to the energetic atmosphere of this global sporting event.
