Full Biography

Terrie Flatt, DO, MA, Hematology/Oncology/BMT, received a one-year, $47,625 Infrastructure Grant from St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Dr. Flatt will use the funding on the project “Breaking Barriers: Increasing Hispanic Participation in Clinical Trials”.

This grant supports a Spanish-speaking Clinical Research Assistant to ensure that more Hispanic children can be treated on clinical trials.

As Dr. Flatt explains, Hispanic children have a higher incidence of cancer and worse outcome than children of other ethic/racial groups. Language and cultural barriers often prevent parents from enrolling their children in clinical trials.

Children’s Mercy has a dedicated Hispanic Oncology Clinic and, with the help of Dr. Flatt’s work, aims to increase the number of Hispanic children enrolled in several types of clinical trials.

“The goal is to learn how cancer in these children may be different and to improve outcomes for these patients so that all children have an equal hope for a cure in the future,” said Dr. Flatt.
