Educational objectives: Expansion of classical neurological exam to include Primitive Reflex Profile. Developmental Assessment (using MDAT) for children suspected of developmental CP, MR, LD and neurologically based behavior disorders. Understanding of multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of children and families with chronic problems such as Cerebral Palsy, mental retardation and learning disabilities.
Demonstrate ability to identify or list normal developmental milestones for infants and children birth to age 6 years.
Describe the clinical features of autism spectrum disorders.
Recognize behaviors that, although typical, are often troublesome to parents (i.e. colic, rocking movements, thumb sucking, masturbation, tantrums, breath-holding, head banging).
List methods to implement developmental surveillance and developmental screening within the primary care practice.
Conduct a literature review and utilize at least one recently published study or review as a resource for a presentation that the student will provide to staff and other rotating trainees prior to conclusion of this rotation
Describe sources for early intervention for children with developmental delay and/or autism spectrum disorders.
Describe similarities and differences between services provided under IDEA (Special Education Law) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Description: Student required to view Primitive Reflex Profile - videotape (Hopkins). MDAT - videotape (University of Oklahoma). The Pediatrician and the Developmentally Disabled Child. Overview to Developmental Pediatrics for the Practicing Physician.
All students rotating in this elective will have the opportunity to work with and learn from all attending physicians in the department.
Criteria for passing: Criteria for passing: >75% on rotation post-test, satisfactory response on narrative portion of post-test, completion of all written reports of observation, professional behavior.
Criteria for honors: Criteria for honors: >83% on rotation post-test, outstanding response on narrative portion of post-test, outstanding presentation on topic of student's choice.
