Weighing In

Integrating efforts to increase the proportion of Kansas City children at a healthy weight

Weighing In is a program at Children's Mercy that seeks to align community programs to help prevent and reduce childhood obesity. It supports collaborative community-based approaches to increase the number of children at a healthy weight. One of our primary goals is reducing the obesity rates for children and adolescents throughout Kansas City.

Building a healthier community

Children and their families have experienced great success in Children’s Mercy’s Weight Management Clinics and Programs and we want to make it easier for children to enjoy a lifestyle that supports their health. Weighing In supports forums to focus and integrate efforts among partners in the Kansas City community.

Obesity in children is defined as a Body Mass Index-BMI-greater
than or equal to 95th percentile for age and sex.

Why it's time to Weigh In

Too many children are obese, putting them at risk for a lifetime of problems.

  • Children who are overweight or obese as preschoolers are five times as likely as normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as adults.

  • In older children and adolescents, obesity is associated with high cholesterol, high blood sugar, asthma, and mental health problems.

  • Obese children are more likely to suffer lifelong physical and mental health problems.

How we're taking action

Weighing In supports collaborative community-based approaches to increase the number of children at a healthy weight. One of our primary goals is reducing the obesity rates for children and adolescents throughout Kansas City by:

  • Providing educational opportunities on prevention and treatment approaches

  • Using a systems approach and facilitate networking opportunities for the varied healthcare, school, public health, and community organizations with an interest in childhood obesity prevention and treatment

  • Supporting community working groups focused on specific settings or issues, such as early childhood, schools, treatment, and building comprehensive healthy lifestyle approaches

  • Tracking our collective progress in the region and evaluate what is working

Working groups

If you are a community organization, health care professional, educator, child care provider, or an individual concerned about childhood obesity join one of the following working groups. Together we can help implement targeted strategies that can make a difference in the lives of our children today and tomorrow.

Promote action to improve healthy eating and active play based on Weighing In's assessment of current practices at area child care providers.

Leverage available resources and implement actions to address priorities found in Weighing In's recent school wellness policy assessment.

In partnership with the Mother and Child Health Coalition, define best approaches, and promote and support breastfeeding at area hospitals and in the work place.

Support active living, healthy eating and healthy weight for all. Using a message campaign developed for the Greater Kansas City area, integrate approaches to increase the proportion of Kansas Citians at a healthy weight.

Focus on supporting community health care professionals by providing training to identify and treat childhood obesity and link families with community resources.
