Diagnosing Hip Conditions in Children

Radiology (or medical imaging) is used to diagnose hip conditions. Your care team will partner with Children's Mercy radiologists to get images of your child's hip.

Experts in imaging

Children's Mercy is a pediatric-specific facility that uses imaging instruments dedicated to imaging children. All our CT scanners are state of the art and recently purchased, and are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR), as are our technologists and radiologists.

We follow Image Gently protocols, which call for using the lowest possible dose of radiation to ensure safer imaging for kids.

Using our EOS low-dose imaging system, our team of experts can create 3D models of your child’s hip anatomy to help the surgical team clearly understand your child’s unique condition before surgery. We also offer other types of diagnostic imaging, including:

  • CT scan with 3-D reconstruction

  • 3-D printer to create models of complex anatomy to better plan for surgical intervention, including measurements of femoral version and pelvic balance

  • MRI cartilage mapping and MRI arthrogram to assess for labral injury

  • Radiographic evaluation that includes specialized views of the proximal femur and pelvis
