Nursing Job Shadow Program

Children's Mercy offers shadowing opportunities for students who are interested in a career in nursing. The Children's Mercy nursing job program may be for you if:

  • You are interested in an observation experience as a nursing student with strong interest in pediatrics.
  • You are interested in an observation experience looking at a possible career in healthcare.
  • You are interested in an observation experience completion as part of a job application process.
  • You are interested in an observation experience desiring experience in a pediatric facility due to limited clinical opportunities through your school of nursing.

To shadow nursing (RN or Nurse Practitioner) at Children’s Mercy, students must be at least 18 and graduated from high school. They are required to complete the attached agreement form and provide proof of the listed immunizations. They are also required to read the attached "Info About Children's Mercy" flyer and submit the signed attestation statement on the last page. After assuring that all immunizations are up to date, we can move forward in setting up a 4 hour experience with one of our nurses.

Critical care areas (ED, PICU, and NICU) are generally unavailable. Available unites include: Surgical, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiac, Medical (neuro, respiratory, infectious disease), Diabetic/ Cystic Fibrosis/ GI unit, Ortho. If there are other areas of interest, it may be possible to set-up observation after your paperwork is received.

If the hours requested are required for class credit, then the shadow experience is not an option. The student would need to go through the school and MOKAN placement.
