Does patient have Mild - Moderate Asthma?

  1. Albuterol 4-8 puffs MDI with chamber or 2.5 mg (unit dose) per nebulizer every 15-20 minutes as needed
  2. Reassess after first Albuterol treatment and within 1 hour of additional treatment

Does patient have Severe Asthma?

  1. Albuterol 0.15 mg/kg per nebulizer every 15-20 minutes as 2.5 mg (unit dose) or 5.0 mg (unit dose x2) or 0.5 mg/kg/hr continous
  2. Reassess after first Albuterol treatment and within 30 minutes of additional treatment

Alternative Medication to Albuterol

Xopenex (<11y 0.63mg/treatment; >11y 1.25 mg/ treatment) may be used as an alternative to Albuterol.

These guidelines do not establish a standard of care to be followed in every case. It is recognized that each case is different and those individuals involved in providing health care are expected to use their judgment in determining what is in the best interests of the patient based on the circumstances existing at the time. It is impossible to anticipate all possible situations that may exist and to prepare guidelines for each. Accordingly these guidelines should guide care with the understanding that departures from them may be required at times.
