Graduate Education in Orthopedics

The orthopedic surgery department at Children’s Mercy is committed to providing the highest education in pediatric musculoskeletal medicine to its trainees. Orthopedic residents, pediatric emergency room fellows, pediatric residents, medical students and nurse practitioners participate in this educational program. 

Orthopedic Residency Training

Training of orthopedic residents from ACGME-accredited residencies features three-month rotations during the second and third year of orthopedic residency. The rotations are designed to train residents in providing care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. 

Summer Scholar Program

Children’s Mercy has funded two scholarships for students to do research with orthopedic staff and faculty. The purpose of this program is to address important questions that affect the health of Children’s Mercy patients and to introduce promising students to the fields of pediatric orthopedics and pediatric rehabilitation.

Dr. Rex and Lillian Diveley Pediatric Orthopedic Lectureship

This event takes place in the fall and features a well-known pediatric orthopedic surgeon as our visiting professor.

Pediatric Grand Rounds

Each month, our faculty presents two hours of accredited CME lectures covering a two-year cycle of core curriculum. Pediatric Grand Rounds is held from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Children's Mercy Auditorium.

Research Activities

The Division has an active clinical research program in which medical students and residents are encouraged to participate.

Spine Symposia

This events takes place three times a year and brings together professionals from different disciplines to discuss new and controversial aspects of spinal care in children.
