Questions to evaluate day care centers

Be sure to make several site visits at unexpected times to day care centers you are considering putting your children in. (Continue such visits even after your children begin going.) Find out the answers to these questions:

  • How long has the center been in operation?
  • Is the day care center licensed, registered, approved or inspected by the appropriate agency?
  • Does the space appear safe?
  • Can children get in and out of the center safely?
  • Is there frequent turnover of staff?
  • What is the staff/child ratio?
  • Are the workers warm and affectionate toward the children?
  • Do the caretakers spend most of their time performing janitorial tasks, reprimanding children or playing with them?
  • Are the children assigned to individual caregivers on a continual basis?
  • Are the children provided with appropriate stimulation for their ages?
  • Is there a quite place for naps?
  • How does the center care for an ill child?
  • Do the children appear happy and relaxed at the center?
  • How do the staff discipline the children? Does this reflect your philosophy?
  • Is there a planned curriculum for the children?
  • Can the children pursue their individual interests?
