Appearances
are important
to everyone. And one of the first things people notice about us is our
smile. So
for people born without perfect teeth (which includes most of us), one
option
they consider is straightening their teeth with braces.
"Braces is a common term for
aligning
the teeth for an aesthetically pleasing look and a proper
bite" says Robin
Onikul, DDS,
pediatric dentist, Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics. "Braces are
important for self-esteem, and are an
asset for
eating and chewing all varieties of food.”
Once a child starts to visit a
dentist
regularly for annual check-ups, the dentist will keep track of the
child’s
growth and development, and will determine the correct timing for
braces, if
needed. Every child is different when in comes to needing or
starting orthodontia.
Many adults also consider braces
if they
want to improve their smile and bite. Some disorders, however, are
easier to correct when a person is younger, says Dr.
Onikul.
Braces should not be a consideration if the child does not keep his
mouth very clean and has
difficulty brushing on a regular basis. When braces are on, the person
is more
susceptible to decay since it is more difficult to keep the teeth
clean.
“Parents should make regular
visits for
their child to see a pediatric dentist or general dentist,” says Dr.
Onikul. “By
doing so, the dentist will help determine a need for and when is the
best
timing for braces.”
