Conferences

  • Morning Report
    • Occurs from 7am-7:30am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
    • Residents on inpatient rotation discuss interesting cases and pose clinical questions that have presented in the last 24 hours
    • Faculty members participate and give guidance on clinical reasoning and management
    • The Chief Residents follow-up the morning’s discussion with pertinent literature
  • Grand Rounds
    • Occurs from 8am-9am each Thursday
    • Local and national leaders present pediatric topics in their area of specialty
    • Attended by faculty and residents
  • Surgery Conference
    • Occurs from 8am-9am one Friday per month
    • Pediatric Surgeons present surgical topics commonly managed by general pediatricians

  • Professor Rounds
    • One of our favorite weekly conferences!
    • Occurs every Monday from 12pm-1pm with a catered lunch served
    • Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, a second or third year resident prepares and presents a case followed by a review of the disease process and relevant literature
    • The format is interactive with faculty, residents and medical students participating in the development of the differential diagnosis and the evaluation of the patient
    • Seniors gain invaluable experience in searching the literature and presenting a conference
  • Noon Conference
    • Takes place during the noon hour on Tuesday and Wednesday
    • A Faculty member presents a topic chosen by the Program Directors as important for general clinical knowledge and/or board review purposes
  • Journal Club
    • Monthly case-based sessions, developed by residents, which work through clinical questions using evidence-based medicine techniques.
  • Morbidity and Mortality
    • Occurs monthly on a Wednesday from 12pm-1pm with lunch served
    • The Chief Residents present cases in a peer review protected format that have educational value for the entire Department of Pediatrics
  • Chief’s Conference
    • Occurs bimonthly on a Thursday from 12pm-1pm with lunch served
    • A fun, interactive, board review conference that utilizes an Audience Response System
  • Academic Scholarship Conference
    • Occurs bimonthly on Friday from 12p-1p with lunch served
    • A hospital wide effort to showcase areas of research and achievement within all departments of the hospital
  • Core Curriculum Didactics
    • Each class meets one Friday per month from 1pm-4pm
    • 1st and 2nd year didactics focus on evaluation and management of commonly encountered disease processes
    • 3rd year didactics consist of board review sessions with lecture-based and questions-based formats
  • Business Meetings
    • Housestaff Meeting
      • Occurs bimonthly from 12pm-1pm with lunch served
      • This conference is informal and is an opportunity for the Chief Residents and Program Directors to provide relevant updates and announcements
    • Roundtable
      • Quarterly informal residency class meeting with the Program Directors to discuss current issues or concerns

Additional Educational Sessions

  • Visiting Professors 
    • We host 3-4 nationally known speakers per academic year who have excelled in general or subspecialty Pediatrics to serve as clinical role models and to help keep us current on advancements in our field
  • Simulation Center 
    •  Our state of the art patient simulation center allows residents to practice common procedures and maneuvers
    • The simulation center hosts Code Blue Workshops and an ED Procedure Workshop for residents
  • Continuity Clinic Lecture Series
    • 18 month lecture series focusing on well-child care and other outpatient general pediatric topics.
    • Includes one clinic lecture per month for time to complete the Johns Hopkins Ambulatory Care Pediatric Modules online
  • Individual Rotation Didactics
    • Residents attend specialty-specific lectures and conferences on individual rotations.
