Dr. Kearns is responsible for direction and oversight of the research program at Children's Mercy Hospital. Dr. Kearns also serves in several other capacities such as the Marion Merrell Dow / Missouri Chair in Medical Research Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology, a UMKC Chair, the Department of Medical Research Associate Chairman, and Department of Pediatrics Chief for the Division of Pediatric Pharmacology & Medical Toxicology.

Mrs. Rusconi fills a general leadership role in the Department of Pediatric Medical Research, focusing on operational management, fiscal management, and program development. She serves as an administrative liaison to the pediatric medical staff, working with section chiefs and department leadership to ensure the standards of research are met. She advises on policies and procedures, contract and budget negotiations, and procurement processes.

Ms. Fox works with the clinical research staff and study team members throughout the hospital to ensure proper conduct of clinical research trials. She works with these staff members to ensure all research is being conducted under FDA/ICH/GCP/Sponsor guidelines. She also conducts research education courses to ensure compliance with regulations.

Mrs. LaManno is the primary contact for the Medical Research Department   Her varied duties include managing and coordinating staff schedules; organizing meetings, supervising administrative assistants and is a liaison to community and academic institutions.  Mrs. LaManno is a vital resource to the department and works closely with Children's Mercy Hospital administrative and medical staff members.

Mrs. Schmoll assists Principal Investigators throughout the hospital with clinical research trials. Principal duties include budget creation, assessment of the  protocol, assisting with study initiation, submission  of study to the IRB for approval, proper conduct of the trial following FDA, sponsor and ICH guidelines,  as well as ensuring monitoring visits and study close  out are appropriate. As a senior level coordinator she also actively mentors, supervises and educated various professional staff.

Mrs. Weigel provides clinical research coordinator services to any investigator at Children's Mercy Hospital on a contractual basis.  She handles all aspects of the coordinator's role in clinical trials which may include budget preparation, IRB submissions, patient recruitment, patient enrollment, lab draws, patient visits, study
drug dispensing, study maintenance, monitor visits, and study closure.

Ms. Sherman assists doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals with the design of their medical research projects, to insure that these projects have an appropriate sample size and that they make efficient and effective use of resources. She also provides statistical analysis for the data from these projects, using the best available statistical models. This analysis will include explanations, tables, and graphs appropriate for the audience that the resulting presentation/publication is targeted towards.

Mrs. Galvin is responsible for the review and negotiation of all confidentiality agreements and clinical research contracts and budgets for Children's Mercy Hospital. All new agreements received by industry sponsors are to be forwarded to Mrs. Galvin who will then coordinate the review of the agreement, negotiate any necessary changes, and have the contracts executed. Contract and budget amendments will also be handled by Mrs. Galvin.

Research Accounting Support

Mr. Claasen is responsible for post-award accounting for federal, state and local government sponsored grants and contracts, and foundation awards.  He provides guidance and consults with principal investigators and study coordinators on post-award issues such as applicable regulations, allowability of costs, equipment purchases, budget variances, subcontract administration, extensions, re-budgeting, F&A, cost share requirements, and financial reporting issues.  Hee works with study team members to ensure fiscal accountability by tracking expenditures against budgets and assures that CMH is paid in accordance with the grant awarded agreements and contracts.  Mr. Claasen also oversees the post-award accounting for industry sponsored clinical trials conducted at the Hospital.

Ms. Warner is responsible for post-award accounting for clinical studies sponsored by pharmaceutical, device, and biologics companies.  Works with study team members to determine study activity and assures that CMH is paid in accordance with the clinical research agreement.  Also coordinates distribution of revenue within the hospital as specified by the approved budget.
