Gary Pettett, MD, Director is responsible for all ORI activities and actions of the Institutional Review Board.  He is the primary resource for investigators regarding IRB issues, the interpretation and application of state and federal regulations, and serves as Chair of the Children’s Mercy Hospital Pediatric Institutional Review Board.  Immediate reporting of serious adverse events should be directed to the Director, ORI, or to the Manager, ORI, in the Director’s absence.  Questions regarding animal welfare, radiation and biosafety in research may be directed to the Director, ORI.

Kathy Johnson, RN, CCRC, Manager, is responsible for daily office operation and serves as a resource for investigators and IRB members regarding IRB processes, development of IRB submissions, review of safety reports and interpretation and application of state and federal regulations.   The Manager, ORI is the primary contact for post-IRB meeting correspondence regarding new protocols.   The Manager, ORI, is a resource for the responsible conduct of research education program and is the primary contact in the ORI for concerns regarding research conduct. The Manager, ORI, also serves as the Human Protections Administrator for The Children's Mercy Hospital, as defined by the Federal Office for Human Research Protections.  Questions regarding animal welfare, radiation and biosafety in research may also be directed to the Manager, ORI.

Lisa Kreipe, Administrative Assistant, manages general office activities, prepares IRB packets for distribution and serves as data manager/computer support for the IRB Education Credits (IRBEC) database and IRB software.   She is the primary interface for all contacts with the ORI.

Saskia Derritt, IRB Coordinator, facilitates IRB meetings including scheduling and agenda management, and most correspondence regarding expedited projects and amendments of studies opened within the previous 12 months.  She pre-reviews materials submitted for full review at IRB meetings for completeness and will assist the responsible party with corrections as needed.  Submission with obvious deficiencies will be returned prior to being forwarded for IRB review.

Corey Schurman, Continuing Review Coordinator, provides assistance to investigators to obtain the information needed for meaningful continuing review and re-approval of research protocols previously approved by the Pediatric IRB.  The Continuing Review Coordinator also monitors adverse event and serious adverse event information, and final reports as part of the continuing review process.   He is responsible for most correspondence regarding exempted projects and amendments of studies open for more than 12 months.   In collaboration with the Manager, Research Compliance, Corporate Compliance Department, he also reviews study information contained in medical records and other study files to evaluate educational and information needs for the responsible conduct of research program.
