The Operating Room is staffed after-hours for emergency cases by evening and night shift staff along with nurses assigned to call.

- Call is divided into specialty teams: General/Urological Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Orthopedic/Oral Surgery, Neuro/Plastic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology / Ophthalmologic Surgery, RNFA, Circulating and Perfusion call. One staff member from each specialty is assigned to cover call.
Orientation is typically 6-8 months in length.
Orientees receive an 8-day didactic orientation to the Operating Room environment, equipment, and perioperative nursing care.
At the completion of this orientation, orientees begin an internship under the supervision of an experienced preceptor.
All orientees complete specific Operating Room Orientation Competencies. These competencies include hands-on, self learning and computer modules.
Ongoing Staff Nurse training includes:
- Safety, e.g., fire, laser, etc.
- Infection control
- The OR Nursing staff receives 12 to 15 education contact hours per year to assist them in renewing their Kansas Nursing License.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- One hour is available every Thursday between 0715 and 0815 for staff development.
- This time is used for staff meetings and continuing education.
- Generally, the time will be used for 1 to 2 staff meetings and 1 to 2 continuing education programs per month.
- Flexibility in scheduling will be maintained to accommodate the needs of the Operating Room staff and visiting speakers.
Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve leadership skills, obtain PALS certification, and more!
Our Operating Room is one of the few in the Kansas City area that will hire and train Graduate Nurses. Refer to Orientation and Ongoing Training Opportunities for details.
Graduate Nurses advance to Staff Nurses after passing the nursing state board exam.
