Susan Whitney, MD, has been selected as the new Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Dr. Whitney has been on staff at Children’s Mercy Hospital for more than 11 years and has been a member of the Anesthesiology Department’s Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Team her entire time at Children’s Mercy. She has served on multiple department and hospital committees and has been the Anesthesiology Department Vice Chair for the past five years. Dr. Adam Schow will take over for Dr. Whitney as Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Whitney is replacing Eric Weissend, MD, as Department Chair at Children’s Mercy. Dr. Weissend is stepping down after nearly five years of department leadership, but will remain on the hospital’s anesthesiology staff.
Dr. Whitney attended medical school at the University of North Carolina, completed Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Washington, and Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Upon completion of training Dr. Whitney served in the Air Force for four years as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She joined the staff of Children’s Mercy Hospital after fulfilling her service obligation.
