Take the Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics Virtual
Tours
Please check in at one of the two desks in the waiting area so
that the nurses and doctors know you have arrived. Toys, books and
other activities are available for you during your wait.
You will change into your hospital pajamas before you go to
surgery. The doctor and the anesthesiologist (sleepy doctor) will
come visit you in the exam room. You may also talk with a
child-life specialist to learn about the hospital and what to
expect.
Located just across from the Elephant (green) elevators on the
first floor, families and caregivers wait here while their children
are in surgery. Your family meets with the surgeon when your
surgery is complete, and is later notified when you
are coming out of the recovery room. They are then reunited
with you on the second floor.
The operating room is where you receive medicine to help you
sleep during your surgery. These rooms are very clean and
bright. To make sure your room stays clean, the nurses and doctors
who are helping you wear hats, masks and special
uniforms.
The recovery room is where you wake up after surgery. You have your
own nurse to make sure you are comfortable before coming out to see
your family.
Some children spend time here with their families before going
home. The nurses will make sure you have a drink and a snack
before you leave.
Some children spend the night in the hospital. Private rooms with a
bathroom, sleeping area for a parent or guardian, television, DVD
player, telephone, and a small refrigerator are provided.
If you are visiting Children's Mercy Northland, this is where you
wait for your appointment. The walls are covered with drawings
of animals, planes, trains and scooters.
