Child Life and Music Therapy Music Therapy Internship Program

Thank you for your interest in the Music Therapy Internship Program.

Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics is committed to providing a quality learning experience that will enable the intern to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be an effective, professional music therapist in a pediatric health care environment.

Care of the patient and family will be the top priority. Interns will gain clinical experience in numerous areas including hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant, rehabilitation, dialysis and the intensive care nursery.

Knowledge will be gained in a variety of ways to include, but not be limited to, observation, direct patient care, in-services, assignments, and interface with interdisciplinary health care teams. There will be opportunities to co-treat with other disciplines, such as occupational, physical, and speech therapy, and child life.

Prospective interns must be knowledgeable about child development, family dynamics, and basic pediatric medical diagnoses. In addition, they must be proficient musicians in voice, piano, and autoharp/guitar, and have general functional knowledge of music theory. A basic repertoire of age-appropriate songs for children of all ages is also required.

Internships begin in January and June. Application deadlines are June 1 for the January start date and November 1 for the June start date. Application materials must be sent in one package.

We look forward to receiving your completed application materials.

Sincerely,

Kim Robertson, MBA, MT-BC
