Pediatric Genomic Medicine Facilities

The Center at Children's Mercy Hospital is located within 3,000 square feet on the main floor of the Sutherland Tower and 1,000 square feet of the Department of Pathology Molecular Genetics Lab.

The Clinical Molecular Genetics Laboratory is a full service diagnostic laboratory, operated by the Department of Pathology. The laboratory is accredited by CAP #19365-01 and licensed by CLIA #26DO443323. It provides services to the Center, such as confirmatory genetic testing of varints found in the research setting.

A new 7,000 square feet wet lab adjacent to Children's Mercy Hospital will become the new home of the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine in October 2012.

Laboratory

The Center's capital equipment was designed to function as CLIA-compliant service "modules," with each currently capable of processing 4 genomes (400 GB) per week. The major Center capital equipment items include two Illuminna HiSeq 2000 DNA sequencers, one Illumina cBot, one Ion Torrent DNA sequencer, two custom-designed Perkin Elmer Sciclone G3 liquid handling robots, incorporating Agencourt SPRI magnetic bead separation, a Perkin-Elmer Janus liquid handling robot, a Bio-Rad CFX96 real-time PCR detection system, Caliper Lab Chip GX, Agilent Bioanalyzer 2000, Covaris LE220 96-well plate DNA sonication system, and Nanodrop S2000 spectrophotometer.

Data Center

The Center's compute resources are located within a dedicated data center with environmental controls, 8 tons of air conditioning, conditioned power, hospital emergency back-up power and substantial UPS capability. The compute resources comprise a 240-core Intel Xeon X5670 cluster with 1TB of DDR3 RAM and 10TB SATA hard drives, a pipeline server (12-core Intel Xeon X5670 with 48GB RAM and 1TB SATA hard drive), Isilon IQ 36000 storage system with 200TB usable capacity, tape backup server, Quantum Scalar i500 23U tape backup system, web server (6-core Intel Xeon X5670 with 6GB RAM and 1TB SATA drive), and database server (12-core Intel Xeon X5670 with 48GB RAM and 16TB SATA drives) on which are deployed the LIMS, GATK, GSNAP, Casava, SSAGA, CMH variant warehouse, RUNES, VIKING software systems. These compute facilities will be expanded in Q3 2012 to include an additional 259 TB of Isilon IQ disk storage as well as 8 additional compute servers (16-core Intel Xeon E5-2650 with 128GB RAM and 500 GB SATA hard drive) for a total of 454 TB usable storage, 368 cores and 2TB RAM. The data center is adjacent to the room housing the DNA sequencers, which also features environmental controls to maintain ambient temperature at 650C, conditioned power, hospital emergency back-up power and substantial UPS capability.
