One of the most interesting bioethical debates in pediatrics
today is one that has nothing to do with a medical treatment. It is
a debate about the effects of media portrayals of sexuality upon
teenagers real-life sexual activity. Researchers have been trying
to figure out whether teens who watch television (or view other
media) that has more frequent or explicit sexual imagery are more
likely to become sexually active themselves. If so, what should
pediatricians do about it. We offer a brief summary of the research
and some recommendations for ways that pediatricians might address
this with their teenage patients. We also provide links to
resources.
