Routine childhood immunizations have been one of the most
dramatically successful public health interventions in history.
Many diseases that killed millions of children in the past are now
preventable through immunization. Routine immunization programs,
however, have always been controversial. Many parents worry about
the side effects of vaccines and either refuse immunizations
altogether or request that the recommended schedule be altered. We
present some data about common fears associated with vaccines -
including fears that too many vaccines will overwhelm the child's
immune system, that certain vaccines can cause autism, or that
immunity will wane over time.
