Enhance inpatient pediatric clinical acumen, patient and family communication skills and understanding of the team approach to patient management via participation on the pediatric hospitalist team.
Admit, manage and discharge a variety of pediatric patients.
Increase pediatric clinical acumen by participating in scheduled didactic experiences.
Learn the indications, complications and procedures for common pediatric inpatient procedures (i.e. lumbar puncture, incision and drainage, venipuncture).
Understand the role of the hospitalist as supervising attending on a traditional general inpatient teaching service and gain exposure to family-centered rounding.
Learn the common inpatient pediatric procedures requiring sedation and become familiar with the protocols, medications and airway management used in pediatric sedation.
Gain exposure to pediatric transport.
Learn and apply current billing practices.
Learn and apply skills used in wound-care management.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Core Pediatric Clerkship with a minimum of four weeks of inpatient pediatrics.
Description: This elective will provide the medical student an opportunity for in-depth exposure to inpatient pediatrics and develop advanced pediatric inpatient clinical acumen and management skills. A strong emphasis will be placed on direct medical care of hospitalized patients with supervision from a dedicated group of hospitalist physician mentors.
This experience will be augmented with interactive didactics and exposure to other relevant pediatric hospital medicine experiences, including medical transport, wound care and family-centered teaching rounds.
