Pediatric Hematology Oncology Academic Curriculum

The fellow begins to formulate a research plan in the first year of their fellowship and meets at least twice per year with their individual Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC). During the second year, the fellow will spend approximately six-months collecting data and conducting analyses. The majority of the third year is devoted to research and the fellows will be expected to present their research findings at local and national meetings.

Hospital-wide lectures and conferences

  • Continuous Quality and Practice Improvement (CQPI)
    • A participative and project-oriented learning experience that is designed to assist the fellow in continuously improving his or her practice.
  • Core Curriculum Lectures
    • Hospital-wide program to address topics common to all ACGME-approved fellowship programs.
    • Conferences cover topics such as ethics; quality improvement and safety; and the impaired caregiver.
  • Principles and Biostatistics Lectures
    • A monthly lecture structured to increase the fellow's knowledge of statistical procedures and analysis as it applies to the medical field.
  • Professor Rounds
    • Case-based presentations for residents and faculty prepared and presented by a senior resident each week.
    • A monthly conference structured to define ways to improve quality of care through the analysis of recent cases.

Clinical Rotations

The First Year

  • Four months Outpatient Clinic 
  • Four months inpatient service 
  • Two months Bone Marrow Transplant 
  • One month research 
  • One month pathology
  • Half-day/week Continuity Clinic
  • Home call average ten (10) nights per month

The Second Year

  • Six months research and on call one week each month
  • Two months Clinical Pharmacology
  • One month elective
  • One month coagulation
  • One month inpatient service
  • One month Outpatient Clinic
  • Half-day/week Continuity Clinic
  • One day/month Biostatistics Course 
  • Home call maximum of seven (7) days per month

The Third Year

  • Eleven months research
  • One month inpatient "pretending" and two weeks of weekday home call
  • Half-day/week Continuity Clinic
  • Home call maximum one (1) weekend per month
